Past the Breakers Reading Providence

  • Ada Books
pastthebreakersprovidence

In 2014 Ben Seretan flew in a big ol' jetplane across the ocean to Italy, where, through a series of chance encounters, a lot of people liked his music all of a sudden. He spent three weeks playing shows, riding the trains, and hugging strangers. Now, ADULT PUNK, out of Denver, CO presents PAST THE BREAKERS, a collection of Ben's poetry, journals, ephemera, et cetera from that golden trip to Italy.

This is a READING also featuring the music of HOST:

You're reminded, as you hear this band play, of that one perfect night in high school, crammed 5-deep in the back seat of your friend's sedan, your stomach full of greasy spoon and the cool, gentle slaps of the wind from the cracked window on your face. Like all great things, this band is from Philadelphia, PA.

with OHIOAN, GOSPEL OF MARS

  • Trans Pecos
transpecos9.3.15

Ohioan is the corporeal embodiment of a spirit-realm journeyer from the deep, dusty deserts  of Arizona. Songs that are not unlike the howling moans of power lines in the wind or the sound of one boulder crushing another. Songs like the first act of "Paris, Texas."

Gospel of Mars self-identify as post-jazz meaning that their instruments - who are really the ones making the music - have played all that bebop shit, played the fake books up and down,  and are frankly sick of it all. It's the only thing they know, though, so what do they do now?

Ben Seretan is me, a man who is currently playing either a very old electric guitar or a broken keyboard bought for a dollar at a stoop sale, as if defying himself. I dare you to find transcendental beauty in these discarded instruments. Are you brave enough to sing with these as your weapons?

RSVP here.

SOUND + VISION LIVE: FAN LETTERS AND FRIENDS

  • Film Society Lincoln Center
snv fan letters

〜(^∇^〜) SHOW #8 (〜^∇^)〜

Logistics:
The address of the venue is 144 W. 65th Street. It's in the Amphitheater at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center. Tickets are 10 dollars. This show is One Night Only.

About the show:
I'll say it - FAN LETTERS (née Alex Nathanson & Dylan Neely) is the future. Meaning that a lot of people seem to be very, very interested in finding that secret alchemical intersection between music performance, video games, good art, digital animation, multiple screens, and tech. The holy crossover where fluidity between forms - which we all seem to think is possible - is achieved. FAN LETTERS is there already, way ahead of many, and they happen to throw in a Duchamp-esque trash-loving playfulness and a John-Cage-approved dedication to performing something all the way through, even if it means just turning a bike wheel.
They are the only group (group? ensemble? what to call them? maybe they're a "band" after all) to ever make me really, really, really enjoy and passionately root for 100 games of rock paper scissors.

They've invited two *incredible* musicians to collaborate on some new work.

Kendall Williams is a master of the steel pan - a virtuoso of the instrument and a passionate scholar of its musics and possibilities. He'll be performing live alongside Fan Letters, who will be providing scores for improvisation and animating his performance.

Maria Chavez is a legitimate dark wizard of the turntables, willing to destroy with lightning bolts any tiny scrap of propriety or concern for how one should DJ, how one should care for records, and how one should not rub the needle of the turntable with a big ass rock. Though she rarely makes audio recordings of her insane live performances, Chavez will provide a pre-recorded soundtrack to Fan Letters animations, screened on our 153-inch plasma screen TV.

ALL IN ALL, NOT TO BE MISSED

First set: Ben Seretan sings the hits of Ben Seretan

*break*

Second set: Weird Mirror in all her weird, reflective splendor

*break*

Third set: special late night *ALL NEIL YOUNG* cover set by Ben Seretan

WHAT IS TROOST?
TROOST is either the best bar you've never been to or the bar you continue to visit in your dreams.

WHO IS WEIRD MIRROR?
Jamie Reeder is blessed with a special sort of movie magic voodoo that allows her to find the out-of-tune piano or the guitar missing a string at the party and sing the perfect songs at the perfect moment - like right when things have mellowed out and the keg is tapped and ideas about who is gonna shtup who are starting to gel but haven't been finalized. She plucks out some notes and sings just the right words and melody that instantly turns the party from another humdrum night of drinking to something that people will later mention in their wedding vows. A very special and deceptively simple sort of room-altering sonic boom of warm and beery feelings.

WHO IS BEN SERETAN?
Ben plays the guitar and sings and is often easy to pick out of a crowd because of his free and loud and kind of annoying laughter.
